A Typical Day at Mix-and-Match Camp

8:45 – I arrive at camp. Linden Hall student counselors meet me at the door and help my parents sign in.

9:00-9:15 – I sit with the Blue Team in morning assembly. After morning cheers and announcements, I meet with my buddy from China, and we play a partner game. The morning leader says we have enough time to play a quick game of Simon Says for team points. Red Team wins this one, but we will get them back next time.

9:15-12:10 – The Specialty Elective I chose this week is Creative Writing. We play Mad Libs as a warm up, and we can’t stop laughing at the funny story we create. We split into groups for a writing prompt. My group gets the prompt, “Explain how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to an alien who has never heard of peanut butter, jelly, or bread.” It is fun to think of how to describe how sticky jelly is or how soft bread is. After sharing our writing pieces, we play a few games to practice descriptive language or creative thinking.

10:30-10:45 – Halfway through the morning Specialty Elective, we take a snack break. I brought a granola bar from home today. Our teacher lets us take a walk in the building to stretch, and I spot Leena! I fill out a card and put it in my team’s box for points.

12:15-12:45 – At lunch, it’s taco day – my favorite!

12:40-1:45 – Station 1 is DIY: Do It Yourself. I love doing crafts, so this is my favorite station. Today I make a duct tape pen. I can’t wait to show to my friends at school in the fall.

1:50-2:45 – For Station 2, I head to the gym for Outdoor Games. We play disc golf. My team got second place.

2:50-3:40 – At Station 3, I go to the Tech Lab for Coding. I learn how to animate my name so that each letter does something different.

3:45-4:00 – We play a Minute Game in the afternoon assembly. This time my team wins.

4:00 – Time to go home! I meet my parents in the lobby and they sign me out. I can’t wait to see what we do tomorrow!

Mix-and-Match Overnight Camp

7:30-8:00 – My alarm wakes me at 7:30 am. I make my bed and get ready for the day. The counselors make rounds at 7:45 to make sure everyone is awake.

8:00-8:30 – My roommate and I sit together in the dining hall for breakfast. Cold breakfast, like cereal and yogurt, is always available. Today there are also pancakes. Yum!

8:30-8:45 – My Cabin Leader inspects my room. Keeping my room clean is an easy way to earn points for my color team.

8:45-9:00 – The overnight campers meet in Honeycutt Lobby. The counselors take attendance and walk us to the other building for the start of the day camp.

4:00-4:15 – Day campers go home, but since I am staying overnight, I get another snack break.

4:15-5:30 – It is time for the Afternoon Session. Today we play Steal the Bacon followed by some free time on the playground. Afterward, we go back inside to make nature suncatchers.

5:30-6:30 – I sit with my “cabinmates” at dinner. We have beef stir fry and eggrolls. After dinner, we have free time to rest in our rooms, call home to parents, play board games in the dorm lobby, or play on the playground outside.

6:30-7:30 – For the Evening Session, we work together to complete this really cool Egyptian themed escape room. We compete in our color teams to see which group has the best time.

7:30-8:00 – In Cabin Meeting, it is time to quiet down for the day. We play a short team building game. Then our Cabin Leader asks us to journal about our camp experiences and share some of our thoughts. I write about the Blue and Red Team competitions and draw a picture of Leena in her hiding spot for the day. I make a goal for myself to volunteer for one of the assembly games tomorrow.

8:00-9:00 – The older campers get to stay up an extra hour, but it is time for me to get ready for bed. I take a shower and then play a card game with my roommate.

9:00 – Lights out! Our Cabin Leader comes to make sure we are in bed and our lights are off. I am tired and fall asleep quickly. Good night!
