History
The History department at Linden Hall encourages each student to develop her critical thinking skills while expanding her knowledge of the world.
History courses develop students’ ability to interpret data, think and write clearly, make comparisons, draw conclusions, present and defend material, conduct research, and read actively. They examine western, world, United States, local, modern, and ancient history as well as related fields in the humanities and social sciences. Throughout the history curriculum, students analyze primary and secondary sources, participate in class discussion, perform independent and guided research, and engage in analytical writing.
THE HUMANITIES SALON
The annual Humanities Salon is the culmination of Honors Humanities and is held to wrap up the Year Long Research project that is the core assignment in the course. Students construct costumes and present their research projects as historical figures. The 2016 Salon was in the held in the style of an Anglo-Saxon/Viking meade- hall in keeping with the first text studied and class obsession- Beowulf.
In the 9th grade, girls may enroll in Honors Humanities History, an interdisciplinary course taken concurrently with Honors Humanities English. Providing students with a thought-provoking study of cultures and events that helped to shape early modern culture, the course examines history as it is related to literature and art and the multiple factors - political, economic, social, religious, intellectual, and social - that have shaped history.
