COVID-19 Updates and Resources

Linden Hall is closely monitoring the outbreak of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. We are following updates and guidance from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), WHO (World Health Organization) and the PA DOH (Pennsylvania Department of Health). We are also monitoring information from NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) and are in communication with other schools throughout the country.

Now that we are in full-swing here at Linden Hall, we are proud to announce that our students have returned to a safe environment with zero cases thus far. Among our safety measures and precautions implemented this school year, we have mandatory health screenings and temperature checks to begin and end the day, one-way hallways and stairways, distanced classroom and dining room seating, mandatory masks, and no more self-serving stations for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Please check below for the latest updates as we continue to navigate through this time.

Campus Updates

Campus Safety

What measures will be taken to provide social distancing and cleaning of frequently used touch points?

Linden Hall is committed to social distancing and frequent, thorough cleaning and sanitation. Classroom spaces are arranged with seating at a distance. Sanitation routines at the end of each class period that will allow teachers and students to clean their personal spaces. Only boarding students and appropriate adult staff will be permitted in dormitory spaces. Common areas will be monitored, and students are encouraged to spend time outdoors when weather permits. Housekeeping staff will be active during the day with a routine to address regular cleaning and sanitation of high-traffic and frequently used areas. Each night, our maintenance and housekeeping staff will thoroughly clean the academic buildings.

As a student, will I need to bring my own mask to wear during the school year?

Yes, you will need to wear a mask during the school day and bring your own mask from home. If you forget your mask, we will have some disposable masks available at the Front Desk.

What is the availability of hand sanitizer campus-wide?

Hand sanitizer will be provided in all classrooms and in frequently visited spaces throughout campus. Students will be encouraged to wash their hands throughout the day.

School-age children are inherently social; what steps will be taken to ensure safe  social distancing and hygiene?

Desks in classrooms will be arranged at appropriate distances, and adults on campus will help students remember to follow guidelines, especially with masks. We will have  in place multiple layers of protection around our students that include cleaning, sanitation, masks, and social distancing.

Will baseline COVID testing be required of all students and LH staff? Will there be periodic testing throughout school year?

No. Because testing only provides a result at a moment in time, we have been advised not to rely on testing as a means for diagnosing the health of our community. Instead, we will use multiple systems for tracking students’ symptoms and health. Parents will be included in student care for our day students; dorm faculty will fill that role for boarding students.

What procedures are in place for visitors to LH? (Ex. parents, colleges, vendors, etc.).

All visitors are required to sign in at the front desk. Upon entering the building, they will be provided masks and will be required to sanitize their hands. Visitor movement through the building will be limited to those who must be on campus to perform a specific task, for example an electrician. All other visitors will be restricted to specified areas and must always remain masked. Whenever possible and appropriate, meetings with people outside the Linden Hall community will be conducted virtually instead of in person on campus.

Academics/ Student Activities/ Community Events

Is Linden Hall opening for the fall semester?

Yes, Linden Hall will open for Orientation on campus on August 17th. To enroll early, please contact Natasha Solomon at nsolomon@lindenhall.org.

Will school sports resume? If so, how can we ensure safety for both home and away events?

We do not yet have a firm answer about how Linden Hall students will participate in fall sports. We encourage students to engage with sports teams even if sports this fall or this year are non-competitive. Coaches are excited to work with students on campus or at a distance on skill development. We may be able to scrimmage internally for some sports if we cannot engage in games with other schools. We are paying close attention to PIAA guidelines.

How will classes be taught this fall?

We will remain flexible in our approach to teaching and learning throughout this crisis. Our primary concern will remain the health and safety of our faculty, staff, and students. After that, we will continue to deliver on the mission of the school. Classes will be in person. Look for additional information later this summer. We are still hard at work on our class schedule and our weekly schedule.

How will Linden Hall handle on- and off-campus events?

As we open campus for classes this fall, we will comply with government regulations and will rely upon the advice of our public health officials and our Penn Medicine LG Health partners to guide us in decision-making, particularly in the realm of large gatherings, domestic and international travel, and interaction with the community beyond the borders of our campus. Currently, the campus at Linden Hall is closed to outside visitors.

We will modify several traditional events at Linden Hall. Look for more information about Orientation Week, the Family Picnic, Convocation, Back-to-School- Night, and Fall Parents’ Weekend soon. As the oldest all-girls’ boarding and day school in the United States, we cherish our traditions and it is difficult to envision activities differently; however, the health and safety of our students and community must come first.

International/Boarding Students

If there is a second COVID-19 wave, what are the school's plans for students who will be on campus?

From our experience this spring, we know our students and other community members can practice safe hygiene and social distancing. We feel that keeping students on campus in a cohort together and isolated from the community will help preserve their health. Remaining on campus will allow students to actively participate in learning  with their peers; our dorm and dining faculty will continue to care for them.

Will Linden Hall require students to quarantine for a two-week period upon returning to school for the fall?

Under certain circumstances, Linden Hall will require a 10-day quarantine upon return to campus. Each situation will be reviewed on an individual basis. Quarantine will take place on campus in a separate building.

Important Resources/Contacts

Where is Linden Hall getting its guidance on the coronavirus and where do you suggest I look for more information?

Linden Hall has formed a high-level task force to plan for and manage possible disruptions related to the COVID-19 outbreak, monitor federal and state recommendations, implement guidance, and communicate with our community. The task force meets regularly to synthesize the latest information, consult with experts, analyze risk, and prepare for various scenarios. The health and well-being of our Linden Hall community is our top priority.

Who can I contact at Linden Hall if I am feeling anxious about the coronavirus outbreak and the impact it has had on my school community?

Linden Hall is acutely aware of the anxiety students and parents are feeling about the coronavirus, particularly those from countries experiencing large numbers of cases, those who cannot travel home, and those whose travel plans have been disrupted due to fears of further outbreak. Our counseling and medical staff at Linden Hall continue to make themselves available to students feeling anxious about the coronavirus and will continue to provide support to our students and their families. To talk to the counseling or medical staff at Linden Hall, contact our Health Office at health@lindenhall.org.

Who should I contact about my remaining questions?

  • Current parents, students, and employees can access the 2021-2022 School Year Group in Blackbaud for links to information.
  • Families engaged in the inquiry or application process, reach out to Ms. Lauren Dennis, Director of Enrollment Management in our Admissions Office at admissions@lindenhall.org.
  • For questions related to employment matters, contact Anne Rampulla, Human Resources, at arampulla@lindenhall.org.
  • Members of the community outside Linden Hall, contact Debbie Hurd, Director of Advancement, at communications@lindenhall.org.

As we are all painfully aware, the situation surrounding COVID spread and containment change on a regular basis. As part of our return to school process, we had planned to test all of our community members. We have just learned that our insurance company and many of yours will not cover the costs of the tests unless there has been specific exposure, or the individual is symptomatic. This means that we will be unable to mass test our students and adults and have had to develop a new return plan.

Simply put, beginning on January 11, we will engage in virtual learning for eight days – through Wednesday, January 20. Then we will return to face-to-face instruction on Thursday, January 21. A few details follow:

For Day Students

  • Students are welcome to come on campus to pick up materials and books they might need. The best time to do this is during the regular school day beginning on January 11.
  • Students will receive specific access instructions from Ms. Teske and certainly should contact any of their teachers with questions.
  • If you are in a situation where it is difficult for you to have your child at home during this time, we will find a safe location for her to work on campus. Please contact Ms. Teske at eteske@lindenhall.org to make arrangements. (This is free of charge and our way of trying to help our working families.)

For Boarding Students

  • Boarding students will quarantine in the dorms and participate in classes virtually.
  • The girls will be able to choose their meals the day before and we offer the concierge service of meal delivery to their rooms.
  • Administration and residential life staff will be on campus. We will provide around the clock supervision, support, and assistance.
  • Five-day Boarding Students are expected to stay on campus the weekend of January 15th through January 17th at no cost to the family. As a reminder, future weekend charges do apply per our policy. · If you have questions, please contact Ms. Solomon at nsolomon@lindenhall.org.
  • 2020-21 School Year
  • Boarding Students

We have a few updates for you from the Office of Student Life.

An email was sent out from Ms. Solomon, our Dean of Students, with important information for boarding students specific to arrival dates. Families can review that message and details, by clicking here.

We are in the process of updating Blackbaud for the 2020-2021 School year and, while we're exploring what the daily schedule will look like with safety and social distancing in mind, student academic schedules will be ready soon. Our Registrar, Ms. Anderson, will be in touch as those schedules become available. If your schedule has a conflict or is missing a class, Ms. Anderson has already sent you an email; please respond to her in a timely manner if that is the case.

Lastly, on behalf of our uniform company Flynn O'Hara, please order school uniforms items early this summer. The company's uniform stores have only just opened up again and they expect to be swamped with orders. As in previous years, the Parent's Association plans to host a used uniform sale in August. Stay tuned for more information.

  • 2020-21 School Year
  • Safety Procedures

As many of you know, we have a COVID-19 Task Force that has been working diligently to develop and plan protocols and procedures to ensure a successful 2020-21 school year. As we move forward with implementing these initiatives, we want you to have open and honest communication about our plans as we implement safety procedures and plan to have students and faculty return to the campus in the fall. Community members should be on the look-out for an email being sent out shortly that will explain our plans in further detail and including a survey link for parents to share with us their comfort and interests in different modes of learning for the fall.

We are planning to have students return to campus this fall. As of this week, all indications are that it will be possible to have students on campus for part of the time or all of the time. At the moment, we’re not certain what we will be allowed to do, so this might include segments of the school community in classrooms at designated times, a hybrid of in-person classes and classes that are at a distance, or times for the entire student body to have synchronous class time either in-person or online and asynchronous guided learning. While we will not be issuing tuition credits for those students who aren’t able to return to campus in the fall, we are ready and able to support all students’ learning to keep them on track until they are able to join us here on campus. No matter what it looks like, Linden Hall anticipates a year of extraordinary education for our girls. We will continue to keep student experience at the top of our minds as we define the coming year and will keep you updated as plans finalize.

While we can’t wait to see our girls’ smiling faces, returning to campus this fall will look different. Safety procedures and protocols will be in place in order to ensure the safety of all students, faculty, and administrators. Steps will be put into place to monitor symptoms of those on campus, which may include frequent temperature checks. There will be frequent surface cleaning in classrooms and common areas. Students, faculty, and administrators are all expected to wear facial masks when indoors and are expected to adhere to social distancing guidelines. We will share more details as we continue to meet with and learn more from our healthcare experts at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LGH) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health. All students and faculty will undergo training on these procedures during orientation week.

Parents of boarding students should look for additional, robust communication from Ms. Natasha Solomon, Dean of Students, and the Residential Life Office later this week about how we anticipate our return-to-campus process and procedures specifically for our boarders. Her letter to you this week will include information about dates for student return and specific information for boarders about quarantine plans, safety procedures, and schedules, and activities.

We are not only excited to welcome you safely back on the Linden Hall campus, but we can also report that Lititz and the surrounding community are continuing to follow safety guidelines as some of our favorite downtown businesses reopen, and we should shortly be entering the Green Phase. We cannot wait to see our entire community again, and we look forward to sharing additional details with you in the coming weeks!

  • 2020-21 School Year

We are very excited to announce our formal plans to reopen Linden Hall for the 2020-2021 School Year. These past few months have been extremely challenging and difficult for everyone, and we are thrilled to share some positive news about returning to our beautiful campus in Lititz, PA.

Linden Hall is on schedule to have our students (returning and new) present on campus for the start of the fall semester as planned in August. Please know that the safety and well-being of our school community is our main priority. Much research, consideration, and planning has gone into developing the protocols and procedures for the 2020-2021 year by our COVID-19 Task Force. Our return to campus will look different from prior opening years; however, these procedures are being put in place to protect our students and faculty. While you will continue to receive information throughout the summer addressing our new safety procedures for daily life at Linden Hall, we have information below to share with you regarding the start of the school year and our plan for meeting the needs of all our students so that you can begin to make your plans.
