The  Linden Ledger

Vol. 04/05 Issue 1 Oct. 12, 2004

As you may already know, each year Linden Hall has a theme for the school year. While last year's theme was "Finance" and the previous year was "Heroes," this year Linden Hall is presenting an environmental theme to its student body. The faculty promises to present many fun and exciting field trips and activities for the students to participate in to fulfill their environmental P.D.P. (Personal Development Points) requirement. While the goal is for the students to learn something new, the faculty also hopes that through these events everyone gets to know each other better.

First off, the students have already had one speaker by the name of Ronald T. Bailey from the Lancaster County Planning Commission talk to them about land development in a presentation entitled "Planning for the Environment." More speakers are planned for assemblies later in the school year.

LH Becomes One with Nature

On the same day following the speaker, the pupils headed outside for a ceremonial tree planting. Each grade planted two cherry trees, with the school planting twelve trees total. The trees are now beautifying the back entrance to Linden Hall on Locust Street.

Many trips are to be offered so the students will get to have a first-hand look and a hands-on experience with nature. A trip to Middle Creek Wildlife and Nature Preserve has already taken place with a nature hike and a look at the visitors' center. Those who participated had a fun and educational experience not only with the environment, but with their fellow schoolmates as well.

Other trips in the making include a trip to the local wolf sanctuary to observe the wolves in captivity, a venture out to Hawk Mountain for a peek at the visitors center and a hike of the area, and an outing to an authentic Amish farm in the winter or spring. There may also be trips to museums including one in Har

risburg and the wonderful Franklin Institute. There may even be a trip to an IMAX theater to see a nature film, or perhaps a trip to the Chesapeake Bay! Just remember, students, while attending these fun-filled events, take plenty of pictures and bring your sketchpads! At the end of the year, you will be asked to make a project based on the environmental theme using whatever sketches or pictures you have taken. There will be a prize for the one with the best project. Good luck!

Renovations Hit the ILD

“Flush!” screams a girl from a bathroom stall. “OK, thanks!” responds a showering peer. Why the warning? Well, it used to be if somebody so much as looked at a toilet or sink in the Annex bathroom, an innocent girl who only wanted to wash her hair would be scalded. Linden Hall is the oldest girls' boarding school in the United States, so it's no surprise that beneath her tiled floors lie some of the country's oldest pipes. However, this is no longer the case, and students will soon be able to shower without fear because, thanks in part to a generous donation as well as school-sponsored funding, the bathrooms in the Annex are being renovated.

Since the beginning of the school

year, the whirring of drills and the pounding of hammers have echoed down the halls. The bathrooms were being entirely gutted to allow for the entirely new plumbing system that was on the way. This led to several complications. No bathrooms meant a journey with nothing but shower-shoes and a robe to visit the other dorms. The pool also had to be drained and left several swimmers marooned for the duration of the construction. Everything will be worth it, however, when the new bathrooms are ready.

An anecdote from Alumna Ava Baran '04 details one of the many memories that will remain even after the renovations are completed:

"It was a weekend and Amy and I decided to go take showers- but she got the bottom one and I the top- which
