Is Linden Hall the oldest girls' boarding school in the country? Linden Hall School for Girls, founded by the Moravian Church in 1746, is the oldest continuously operating girls' boarding school in the United States. Committed to excellence in the education of girls, Linden Hall provides a challenging college preparatory curriculum for average, above average, and gifted students in grades 6 - 12.
How many students attend Linden Hall? 160 students; approximately 50 in the Middle School and 110 in the Upper School
How much does it cost to attend Linden Hall? 7-day Boarding: $39,990. 5-day Boarding: $37,590. Day Student: $16,990. Required deposits and dues are approximately $1,650. ESL Instruction for international students is $1,200/trimester.
Is financial aid available? Linden Hall is deeply committed to making the excellence of its education available to qualified students and ensuring that the school continues to attract a diverse and talented student body. The school awards financial aid grants, which are based on demonstrated family financial need, and offers Merit Scholarships, which are based on a student's record of success. In certain cases families receive both need-based and merit awards.
What percentages of your students are on financial aid? Approximately 28 % of Linden Hall students receive some form of financial aid.
Do students attend classes on Saturday? No, classes are not held on Saturday.
Where is Linden Hall located? Linden Hall is located on Main Street in the historic Borough of Lititz, Pennsylvania, which was founded in 1756. Lititz sits in the heart of Lancaster County, famous as 'Pennsylvania Dutch Country'. Within walking distance of the school are quaint shops, the Wilbur Chocolate Factory, a chocolate cafe, a pretzel factory, restaurants, a tea room, a soda fountain, a community park, an historic inn, and many bed and breakfasts.
Is Linden Hall easily accessible? Linden Hall is very easily accessible by car, bus, train or airplane. Linden Hall is located approximately one and one-half hours west of Philadelphia, one and one-half hours north of Baltimore. The school is located approximately two hours from Washington, D.C. and three hours from New York City. The Lancaster Airport is located just ten minutes from Linden Hall, the Harrisburg Airport is a forty-five minute ride from the school, and the Philadelphia and Baltimore airports are an hour-and-a-half away. The Lancaster train station, which accesses Harrisburg, Philadelphia, New York City, and other cities in the north-eastern corridor, is a twenty-minute ride from the school. The school provides transportation for students to the train station who go home for the weekend.
What is your student/faculty ratio? The student/faculty ratio is 5:1.
Does Linden Hall require its students to wear uniforms? The school uniform is worn Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM - 3:35 PM (including lunch and exams). After class, a student is free to choose her own style of clothing.
What is an "Advisor"? Each student chooses a faculty or staff member to be her advisor. Advisors give out report cards, discuss grades, monitor Personal Development Points, and take a special interest in each of their advisees The advisor also offers guidance and helps their advisees solve problems. The Advisor serves as the liaison between the student, her family, and the school. However, primarily, an advisor is an advocate, counselor, facilitator, and friend to the students.
Will I have a roommate? Yes. Dorm rooms are double occupancy with a single bed, desk with desk light, and a closet with four-drawer dresser inset for each student. After a year and with certain requirements of good grades and good citizenship a Linden Hall student may apply for the privilege of her own room in the Independent Living Dorm (ILD).
Who picks my roommate? Roommates are requested by returning students with the approval of the Director of the Upper School and Director of the Middle School. Our international students have the opportunity to room with a student from another country and perhaps learn an additional language.
Is there a responsible adult in the dormitory at all times? Yes. A Dorm Parent apartment is within close proximity to each dorm section.
Are students permitted to remain in the dorms over holidays, vacations or other breaks? No. The dorms are closed during the holidays and over breaks. Many of our international students spend holidays with US students or travel on school-sponsored trips during certain breaks.
How often may I go home? In general, the school maintains an open-weekend policy. This does not apply to the first weekend of the school and to pre-exam weekends and the last weekend of the academic year. Unless it is an 'on campus' weekend, seven day boarders may return home at the request of their family. Five day boarders go home each weekend unless there is some school-sponsored activity on campus in which they would like to participate.
Are pets permitted in dorm rooms? With the exception of a small fish tank (a filtered tank 10 gallons or less in size), pets are not permitted in the dorm rooms.
Is tutorial assistance available? Yes. The Academic Help period is held each day right after classes; all teachers are available to assist students during this time period with no additional charge. We also have a tutoring program for students requiring additional assistance and support in a one-on-one atmosphere, as determined by the Academic Resource Specialist, faculty, and parents. There is an hourly charge for tutoring.
Is there a study hall period? Yes. In addition to the Academic Help period right after school, there is a mandatory study hall in the evenings. The hours between 7:30 PM and 8:30 PM (for middle school) or 7:30 PM and 9:00 PM (for upper school) are set aside for evening studying. Middle school students report for study hall in the Library and upper school students report to the Annex Study Hall. Honor Roll Students may study in their rooms, in the library, or in study hall.
Will I be able to bring my computer? Yes. All of the dorms are wired for computers. Your parent may choose to activate network access in your dorm room. You may either provide your own computer or rent one from the school. Network computers in each dorm lounge are available for general student use. Students also have access to the computers in the computer lab.
Does Linden Hall offer AP Courses? Yes. Honors courses are offered in a wide variety of courses. Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered in numerous areas depending on student interest. In recent years we have offered AP courses in Art History, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, English Literature, Environmental Science, European History, French Literature, Photography, Physics B, Spanish Language, Statistics, and US History. Other AP Courses may be available upon request. Additionally, Linden Hall offers opportunities for advanced studies at area colleges, universities and art institutes.
What is your average class size? Our average class size is 8 students per class.
Is it possible for me to speak with a current Linden Hall family? We welcome the opportunity for parents to speak with the parents of current or former students about their Linden Hall experience. Likewise, upon request, arrangements can be made for students to communicate with a current Linden Hall student. You need only let the Admission Office know that you would like to an opportunity to speak with a current Linden Hall family.
How are medical appointments handled? Students should have all routine medical, dental and ocular work done at home prior to the start of school. Emergency medical and dental appointments will be scheduled by the school nurse with local doctors and with parental approval.
Is medical attention available on campus? Linden Hall provides a nurse and on-campus infirmary. Students too ill to report to class should report to the school nurse. The nurse is on duty during the school day and two doctors in a family practice are on 24-hour call. A fully functional state-of-the-art hospital is located 5 minutes from the school.
Are telephones provided in the dorm room? No. Dorm rooms are not equipped with telephones. However, students have access to pay phones to make and receive personal phone calls. Students are also permitted to have personal cell phones, which may only be used during non-academic times.
May I have a cell phone? Yes. Many Linden Hall student have personal cell phones. As you can appreciate, cell phones may not be on in class or during chapel, assembly, or other school programs.
What percentages of your student body represent day students? Approximately one- third of our student body represents day students.
What percentages of your student body represent international students? Approximately one- quarter of our student body represents international students.
What percentages of your student body represent students of color? Approximately ten percent (10%) of our student body are students of color.
Foreign students attending Linden Hall come from what foreign countries? Currently we have students representing Africa (Tunisia), Australia, Belize, China, Dominican Republic, India, Ivory Coast, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and Taiwan.
Do students stay for the weekend? Yes. Unlike a number of boarding schools where the majority of students go home for the weekend, this is not the case at Linden Hall. In fact, many day students return for activities scheduled for the weekend.
What are typical weekend activities? Certain events are constants. There is always a trip to the local grocery store, the Asian Market, the local shopping mall, the local Wal-Mart Super Center, use of the school gym, pool, and fitness center. There are movies (on and off campus), roller skating, bowling, excursions to museums, the symphony orchestra, plays at the Fulton Theater, and trips to local restaurants. There are trips to Baltimore, New York City, Washington D. C. and Philadelphia. There are dances and other social activities with the young men from nearby boys' schools.
Are Day students permitted to participate in weekend activities? Yes. Day students are welcome to participate in all school sponsored activities, whether they occur during the week, evenings, or on weekends.
Does Linden Hall offer any trips abroad for its students? Yes. In the recent past there were trips to Austria, England, France, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland. Students, as well as their families and friends, are welcome to participate in the Spring trips.
What sports are available at Linden Hall? Volleyball, tennis, equitation, basketball, swimming, lacrosse, soccer, softball and track are some of the sports available to students at Linden Hall.
What programs are offered in the Arts? Theater production, photography, ceramics, dance, sculpture, painting, drawing, computer art, bell choirs, choral and instrumental music.
What is the 'Personal Development Program'? The Personal Development Program (PDP) is a reflection of the school's 4C's Program. The PDP emphasizes life-long learning (Curriculum and Culture), community service (Character), and personal fitness (Conditioning).
Does Linden Hall have an Honor Code? Yes. The purpose of the Honor Code at Linden Hall is to develop and promote personal integrity, character, and respect for self and others.
Does Linden Hall have policies regarding smoking, alcohol, or drugs? Yes. The possession and/or use of cigarettes, lighters, matches, alcohol, drugs and drug paraphernalia is forbidden.
Does Linden Hall have a summer program? Linden Hall does offer a non-residential summer day camp for girls between the ages of 7 to 12. Linden Hall also offers a residential horse riding camp. We anticipate offering a Leadership Camp beginning in the summer of 2008.
Is Linden Hall accredited? Yes. Linden Hall is accredited by the Middle States Association and is approved by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
If I attend Linden Hall, may I store my personal belongings over the summer or must I take them home at the end of the school year? There is limited space available for returning students to store their belongings over the summer months.
Is Linden Hall affiliated with any religious organization? Linden Hall was founded by the Moravian Church. While the school continues to use some of the facilities of the Lititz Moravian Church, adjacent to the school, there is no direct affiliation with the Moravian faith.
Are Linden Hall students required to attend chapel? Yes. All students and faculty attend weekly chapel services. Planned and led by the Headmaster, chapel is a time for the entire school community to be together in an atmosphere of spiritual nurture and reflection. Readings and music which represent all major philosophies and religions are incorporated, and students are encouraged to participate in leadership roles.
Will my daughter be able to regularly attend a church of our faith tradition? Yes. Linden Hall encourages but does not mandate church attendance. Upon request, the school makes every effort to provide transportation for the student to a local church, synagogue, or mosque of the family's faith tradition.
Does Linden Hall have a swimming pool? Yes. The pool is used for recreational purposes and is often opened in the afternoon and on weekends.
Does Linden Hall have an equestrian program? Linden Hall offers an equestrian program for new and experienced horseback riders. Girls may bring their own horse or ride a Linden Hall thoroughbred. Styles include: hunt seat equitation, hunter showing, show jumping, and horse trials. Facilities include a 20 stall stable, an 80 x 200 foot indoor arena, an outdoor arena, paddocks, and cross-country jumps. Linden Hall's equestrian program is highly successful, most recently having captured the Zone II Regional Championship.
How often may I ride? Students may ride as a part of their physical education requirement. Instructional riding is scheduled during and after school (proper attire and hard hats are required). Students may also ride on weekends if they make arrangements with the riding instructor in advance.
How does Linden Hall handle spending money for students? Parents of Middle School boarding students (Grades 6-8) may set up an allowance account for their daughter's personal spending. We recommend a $25.00 limit on allowances per week. For our Upper School boarding students (Grades 9 - 12), Linden Hall does not offer allowance accounts. Instead parents are urged to set up a VISA BUXX account or a checking account at a local bank.

Do Linden Hall students receive scholarships to college? Yes. Many Linden Hall students receive scholarship awards to the college of their choice.
